Nature’s Plenty

Today, most farms are made to feed lots of people. To do this, farmers remove trees and hedges to make one large field and grow a single crop, like wheat, using chemicals called pesticides to kill insects.

But without insects and hedges, birds are left without food and homes.

In a quiet corner of Normandy, France, Charles and Perrine dreamed of growing healthy food for their family.

They gave up their jobs.

They bought a field of poor, thin soil.

They’d never grown food before.

They made many mistakes.

Unlike other farms with their big, pesticide-soaked fields, they started working in ways inspired by nature. They started small, avoided waste, and valued diversity. Just like nature, they worked in cycles.

The couple worked by hand. Without machinery, they didn’t need fuels like oil or gas. They fed the soil with natural things like manure from their animals and compost from kitchen scraps.
